Designing your new kitchen

Jul 28th 2020 Staff

Designing a new room in your house can be very exciting, but it can also present many challenges. If you’re planning to remodel your kitchen, then the countertops, cabinets, and appliances are likely at the top of your list. However, it’s important not to forget about the lights, and at Southern Lights, we can help you find the latest kitchen lighting trends for your home. Our showroom has everything from island lighting to under cabinet lighting, and our team can provide you with the assistance you need to pick out the perfect options!

THE CENTRAL FIXTURE

When designing your new kitchen and the lighting that will be in it, you may start with the central overhead fixture. You want this light to make a statement, as well as provide general illumination for the space. For some homeowners, this fixture needs to be elaborate and eye-catching, while for others, it simply needs to have a presence within the room while also being very practical. Whatever the case may be for your kitchen, you can find the right option in our store.

A small chandelier can be ideal for your kitchen, as long as it works within the space. If it’s going to be hanging above an island, then it’s going to function as a task light as well as an ambient fixture. For this design, it’s best if the light is directed downward onto the counter surface. If it’s going to be above an open part of the room, with no countertop underneath it, then you will likely want it to direct light both upwards and downwards.

TASK LIGHTING

As for the task lighting in your new kitchen, it’s imperative that it’s part of the design from the very beginning. You’re going to be spending the majority of your time in the kitchen cooking and cleaning, which is why it’s important to have task lights in the right places.

Under cabinet lighting can be a lifesaver when it comes to meal prep, since it provides focused illumination on your countertops. These fixtures can be integrated so well into your layout and design that you never actually see the light sources, but they’re always there when you need them.

As for other task areas such as the sink and island, hanging pendants are often the best choice. If the island is going to be where you serve appetizers or set up the bar during dinner parties, then multiple pendants can be a great option. When it comes to light above the sink, one pendant can often suffice.

LIGHTING CONTROLS

No room design is complete without the proper lighting controls. When it comes to your kitchen, you don’t want one switch that controls the central fixture, the island pendants, and the light above the sink. Wiring in new controls can take time, but it can be well worth it once everything is finished. You’re going to be remodeling the entire kitchen anyway, so why not invest in new switches and dimmers? You’ll also want to have controls near every entrance to the kitchen so that you don’t have to walk all the way across the room just to turn on the lights.

Our store has a fantastic selection of lighting controls, and we can help you choose the right options for your kitchen. We want to make it easy for you to set the mood and to create lighting themes that are versatile and welcoming.
